Elementary School Program
IHC Elementary School develops students to become independent learners, responsible for and capable of their own success. Watertown, NY and Fort Drum elementary school students will learn the study skills and organizational skills necessary for their success later on. Our curriculum is aligned with the Common Core Standards for States, a rigorous framework being adopted by New York and most states nationwide, integrated with the teaching of the Catholic faith. This curriculum ensures that what our children are learning in each grade prepares them for the next, from Kindergarten through sixth grade, and continuing into seventh grade all the way to graduation from high school. It also helps develop the whole child in spirit, mind, and body, providing a foundation for their journey through life. As with IHC Junior/Senior High School, everything at IHC Elementary School is fully integrated with the school’s spiritual life and mission. As a Catholic school, we begin our day with Morning Prayer, and students learn in an environment based on Christian values. IHC Elementary School’s academic program is grounded in IHC’s beliefs.
Spanish Pilot Program
Beginning in School Year 2013 – 2014, IHC Elementary began piloting a Spanish program for Kindergarten and first grade. The program has been very successful, and we are now in our second year. The program is based on the philosophy that if a student is going to learn a language, the earlier they start, the better. In addition, learning a foreign language early has been shown to increase student achievement in other areas, including literacy. Our Spanish teacher will spend an hour each week with every class, helping the children acquire the basic ability to communicate in another language, and to develop an appreciation and understanding of other cultures. The Spanish teacher will work with each of our classroom teachers to reinforce the core curriculum being taught.
